As your new Principal, I found Atikameg School is a positive place for both students and staff. The students were welcoming. As with any school year, September started off to a super busy. There are several new teachers hired this year and for the most part many of last year’s staff have returned. We started the year off with creation of timetables, course selections and defining the roles.
Several parents were here for Meet the Teacher Night. Parent; meeting the staff and sharing a hot dog and hamburger. We had a good turnout and it was great to meet so many parents.
Our special events for September included the High School Graduation and Grade 9 Prom. The graduating students look so mature as they venture onto their next milestone in life. Our grade 9’s, are looking forward to a successful year in high school.
Our Grade 5 classes participated in a Culture Camp being held at Martin Lake Camp during the week of September 27. Over the course of the year, other grades have been invited. For our Grade 5’s, the camp presents learning away from the classroom.
Several of the staff have gone to training for literacy. This training will assist in programming and give the techniques necessary to help students with their reading. Reading with your child at least 15 minutes per night with your child will help develop vocabulary skills, promote better communication skills and gain mastery of the language. Reading a book together will assist in building relationships with your child.
For the upcoming month, we are hosting a memorial Volleyball tournament on Friday, October 21. This should be an exciting tournament and community spectators are welcome. With support from KTC Education, Treaty 8 Education and Northland School Division and the efforts of our own staff and parents, our students will have excellent educational opportunities throughout the 2015-2016 school year.
